***Please note that the American Clean Energy and Security Act is actually HR 2454. I apologize for the confusion. Thank you for calling this error to my attention. The bill mandates that 15% of the nation's electricity come from renewable sources such as wind and solar power by 2020. Companies will be forced to buy permits to emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses. The bill places caps on those emissions which would drive the cost of energy up on American businesses and consumers. Estimates place the cost to American families at over $3,100 per year. American jobs may be forced to move out of the US to countries where there are no caps on carbon emissions. HR 2454 also contains a provision that imposes taxes on goods imported from countries that don't match US carbon restrictions-a slap at major trade partners such as China and India-that some fear could start a trade war. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) came out with a study that shows the danger of this new legislation. To read more, click here. TAKE ACTION NOW: Contact your Senators today and tell them to VOTE NO to HR 2454 and higher energy costs for American families and businesses! Dale will talk to the ranking GOP member of the Judiciary Committee in the U.S. Senate about the controversial nomination of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. And after the U.S. House passed the historic "cap and trade" legislation by a narrow 219-212 margin on Friday, Sen. Session will be asked about it's chances in the Senate.
If you have a question for Senator Sessions, e-mail Dale at dale@wvnn.com and maybe he will ask your question on the air tomorrow morning

| I am so proud of the leadership in this organization in what you have achieved in a short 6 months in membership. As you know, we have to submit our numbers for the year so far to get credentials for NFRW convention. We are very pleased to announce that we have already surpassed our numbers from last year at the end of the year. The best news is that we can continue to add to those numbers for the rest of the year and we will. I travel to Guntersville to meet with a new club that is forming The Marshall County Republican Women and the ladies in Pike County are working very hard to get their paperwork completed as well. I know that there are more members out there that may have not renewed yet for some reason or have not yet found us. Let's continue to push for membership and add to our numbers for it only makes us stronger. Remember: One Day! One Woman! One Vote! We do make a difference. Bobbie Lou President, AFRW |
Obama Justice Department Decision Will Allow Non-Citizens to Register to Vote in
Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel issued the following statement following the
“DOJ has thrown open the door for activist organizations such as ACORN to register non-citizens to vote in
“This process is critical to protecting the integrity of our elections. We have evidence that non-citizens have voted in past
“It is important to underscore that not a single person has come forward to say he or she could not vote because of the verification process. Further, while DOJ argues that the process is somehow discriminatory, the historic voter turnout among Hispanic and African-American voters in the 2008 general elections clearly says otherwise.
“This decision provides a specific example of the inherently illogical and unfair nature of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. It is a sad day for the rights of our state and for the integrity of our elections. I remain committed to continuing the fight for citizenship verification. In the coming days, I will consider every option available to the state, including the possibility of legal action.”
Background:
As required by law and ordered by federal courts in October 2008, the eligibility of new applicants to register and vote is checked against the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) and Social Security Administration databases to ensure that individuals registering to vote report similar information. If information in these databases does not match information reported on the voter registration form, the applicant is asked to clarify the information. Additionally, if the applicant previously reported to DDS that he or she is not a U.S. Citizen, that person is asked by a registrar to provide proof of citizenship.
Prior to the November 2008 General Election, Secretary Handel sent letters to 4,771 voter registration applicants whose records at DDS indicated they were not U.S. Citizens, asking them to provide documentation of their citizenship. As of March 2009, 2,148 of these applicants still have chosen not to resolve the question about their U.S. Citizenship.
In the November 2008 General Election, county election officials reported that 599 individuals cast a challenged ballot because the voter had previously indicated to DDS that he or she was not a United States citizen and had not resolved their status with county officials at the time of the election. Of those, 369 ballots were accepted because the voter provided documentation of their citizenship after the election; and 230 were rejected because the individual chose not to confirm his or her citizenship status.
On October 10, 2008, activist organizations including the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit to attempt to prevent
On October 16, 2008, U.S. District Court Judge Jack Camp denied the motion by MALDEF and ACLU; directed the State to continue the verification process; and acknowledged the State’s requirements to verify information under the Help America Vote Act. In his order, Judge Camp stated:
HAVA requires that Defendant Handel match information in the statewide voter registration database with information from the Georgia DDS and the SSA databases “to the extent necessary to enable each such official to verify the accuracy of the information provided on the applications for voter registration.”
Judge Camp also stated:
Since the possibility of fraudulent and inaccurate voting could significantly injure and diminish the public’s respect and confidence in the electoral process, the State’s ability to maintain reliable voter lists is paramount to a temporary and minor inconvenience to a few individuals.
On October 27, 2008, a U.S. District Court three-judge panel again directed the State to continue its voter registration verification process and challenge ballot procedures through the November General Election.
The 2008 elections were the largest in
| Voter Demographic | 2004 Total Number of Votes Cast | 2008 Total Number of Votes Cast | Percentage Increase in Votes Cast |
| Hispanic/Latino | 18,000 | 43,000 | 140% |
| African-American | 834,000 | 1.2 million | 42% |
| White | 2.3 million | 2.5 million | 8% |
Karen Handel was sworn in as Secretary of State in January 2007. The Secretary of State's office offers important services to our citizens and our business community. Among the office’s wide-ranging responsibilities, the Secretary of State is charged with conducting efficient and secure elections, the registration of corporations, and the regulation of securities and professional license holders. The office also oversees the Georgia Archives and the
President Obama has asked Congress to pass health care reform legislation for his signature by the end of July. This “change” despite its complexity is rushed – apparently to avoid debate, transparency and protest until the ink becomes indelible as with the Stimulus Bill. If Americans don’t want nationalized health care, we can’t wait for details; we must act immediately.
Democrats have already organized neighborhood coffees in states across the nation to help push through Obama’s health care reform. They know the power of Republican Women when we turn our attention to education and lobbying, so their intent is to handicap us. We don’t have time to organize grass roots coffees or distribute flyers at fairs or to organize forums, but we can be creative and have a huge impact.
While we don’t know how the cogs and gears of Obama’s socialized medicine machine will work, we know that the best health care in the world will be compromised, technological innovation will shrink, and quality of life will suffer. If we don’t want long waiting periods and the government deciding who will get operations, etc., Republican Women must act now to counter the Democrats’ highly oiled political tank.
What can we do?
The most effective tool, given the restriction of time, is to call every Member of Congress. We need at least two committed volunteers from every club to call every Member of Congress (one call per club to every Member). RWTC is already doing this. If clubs across our nation would join us, Republican Women could roam the corridors of
What should our message be?
We should tell every Member of Congress that if the primary purpose for Obama’s health care bill is to cut costs of health care so that all Americans can have health coverage, as Obama says, the president should first fix loopholes in federal law to cut hundreds of billions of dollars in waste and abuse in current health care programs. There are many examples, but one of the easiest fixes is to clarify the 1985 EMTLA legislation that allows wealthy foreigners to fly into the
The EMTLA legislation is explained in the attached article that RWTC is posting on websites, blogs, and in op-ed articles. Congress will know that EMTLA stands for Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. This one example is dramatic so it will get the attention of Congress! This is just one way Obama and Democrats can save hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Other examples are also listed in the attached article for your information.

Citizens of the district deserve to know exactly why Hall falsified her time sheets, vote to give herself a 62% pay raise, how she plans on bringing jobs to Huntsville, and if she will continue to vote for tax increases as she has been doing while being a State Representative.
Executive Committee Members, Senate District 7 voters and concerned citizens: It has become apparent that Democrat Laura Hall is not going to reach out to the voters and taxpayers of Senate District 7 to inform them of her vision for the district. Therefore, the need is there for the media outlets to begin the conversation for her and host a debate, or multiple, so that voters will have an opportunity to hear Paul Sanford and Laura Hall and to decide which is the best suited to represent them in the state senate. I encourage you to call the media outlets listed below and urge them to put on this debate on Saturday, June 6th, right before the election (election on Tues, June 9th) so that the people will have a chance to make the most informed decision possible. If you aren’t in the district, I would urge you to call as well, the state senate makes decisions for all of us, so it will benefit everyone if the voters in senate district 7 make the right choice – both for them, and for the good of our state.
